Wendel Sample Pack
Wendel Sample Pack
Legendary Sounds, Masterfully Revived for the Modern Era
Wendel, more than a mere computer system, is a cherished part of our family. This 75 lb blue box was expertly tailored by none other than Roger Nichols, the trailblazer of digital recording and an unrivaled recording engineer fondly remembered as “The Immortal”.
Seeing people, companies, and even AI increasingly sampling beats and releasing Wendel Jr. sounds, we felt compelled to share the original, untouched sounds that helped shape the iconic style of Steely Dan, John Denver, Toto, Heart, Duran Duran, Rosanne Cash and Stevie Wonder to name a few. The impeccable and profoundly human-sounding drum tracks, created from samples that Roger so masterfully recorded for Wendel, continue to echo the unique sonic signature of 8-time Grammy Winner for engineering and Technical GRAMMY Award recipient, Roger ‘The Immortal’ Nichols.
To add an extra layer of care and love to these timeless sounds, Roger’s protégé, Jason Levine who is also a Principal Director of Creative Cloud Evangelism at Adobe, has meticulously listened to and carefully converted all these samples to modern formats. This is our tribute to the king of recording real drums, Roger Nichols, and his lasting legacy in the world of music. It’s time for you to relive that distinctive Steely Dan sound, brought back to life by the very hands trained by the maestro himself.
NOTE: these are the original samples recorded by Roger and the only sample pack endorsed by The Roger Nichols Estate.
What's included?
Your download includes a zip file. There are over 500, one-shot WAV files (drum and percussion samples) neatly organized. Each sample is 48kHz/24-bit, carefully converted from its original 50kHz/16-bit raw format (some originating in 12-bit as well). Any DC offset present in the original digital transfers has been corrected for pristine fidelity and maximum amplitude.
For detailed information about the included samples, please refer to the comprehensive ‘READ ME’ file included in the download.
Please don’t share the zip, we know it’s easy but we really appreciate the support. We think 500+ Samples that really had the love and energy put behind them that only “The Immortal” could do should be worth a lot, BUT we kept it reasonable for that reason! Thank you <3
Most files are mono, as that’s how they were originally intended. However, some samples were originally captured in stereo during recording, and so they are presented here, for the first time, in stereo versions.
How many velocities / articulations each sample? As Wendel was capable of digitally re-pitching (to simulate variation/alternate hits) most of the samples are individual, unique one-shots. However, Roger was never content with only having a single drum to work with. He would sample several drums (say, kick drums) from the same manufacturer in a variety of sizes and attacks. The same goes for snare drums. That said, there are several folders that contain multi-samples of the same snare/kick or hi-hat. One specific folder (Wendel Preset Snares) contains a variety of snare drums, each with multiple velocities and several articulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do with it?
Think of it as a non-alcoholic botanical spirit—brewed like a tea, but pours like a mixer. It’s an elevated elixir! You can sip a little straight if you like, but it's even more delicious mixed into sparkling water, citrus soda, tea, coffee, or crafted into a fancy cocktail. Each sip offers herbal goodness, uplifting your mood like you're strolling through an English garden, getting a hug from flowers.
What does it taste like?
Floral. Tangy. Herbaceous.
It has fresh floral notes, lively citrus, and smooth herbal layers, with complexity similar to a premium spirit—minus the alcohol.
Each sip bursts with herbal magic—we use culinary-grade lavender (no soapy aftertaste!) and partnered with alchemists in Oregon to add a special spagyric extract, bringing a touch of magic to every drop.
Your eyes widen as the playful pink peppercorn awakens your senses, then you settle into your body with comforting vanilla.
What is spagyric extract?
A spagyric extract is a unique, alchemical herbal extraction method designed to capture the complete essence of a plant, including its physical, energetic, and mineral properties. The word "spagyric" comes from the Greek words meaning "to separate" and "to reunite." This process involves breaking the plant down into its essential components and then reuniting them to create a more potent and holistic extract.
The process includes three key stages:
- Ethanol Extraction – The plant's active compounds are extracted using alcohol to draw out essential oils and medicinal properties.
- Hydrosol Distillation – The plant's water-soluble components are captured through steam or water distillation.
- Calcination – The plant's leftover minerals are obtained by burning the remaining plant material to ash, which is then purified and added back to the extract.
This meticulous process is believed to create a more complete and absorbable extract, capturing the body, spirit, and essence of each botanical. In Heartbreak Healer, we use spagyric extracts to bring out the full potential of herbs like motherwort, turkey tail, and lemon balm.
Do extracts have alcohol?
Yes, many herbal extracts, including those used in Heartbreak Healer, are made using alcohol as a solvent because it’s highly effective at drawing out and preserving the active compounds from plants. Alcohol helps extract both the water-soluble and fat-soluble components, making the resulting extract more potent and long-lasting.
Although the extracts in Heartbreak Healer are made using alcohol, the final amount of alcohol in the product is extremely low. The alcohol content is minimal—just enough to support the extraction process and ensure the potency of the botanical ingredients, so Heartbreak Healer remains classified as a non-alcoholic product.
Why pure cane sugar?
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down! We use pure cane sugar in Heartbreak Healer because it offers a clean, natural sweetness that enhances the complex flavors of our botanicals without overshadowing them. It also doesn’t leave an aftertaste like some artificial or alternative sweeteners, and we did a survey of people avoiding stevia and it felt appropriate to leave those out in this formula.
Also, sugar is sugar, regardless of its source, when it comes to how our bodies process it. Whether it’s cane sugar, agave, honey, or another natural sweetener, the body breaks it down into glucose, which is used for energy. While the type of sugar may affect taste, texture, or processing, the biological impact remains the same. That’s why we recommend consuming sugar in moderation, while still enjoying the benefits and flavor it brings to our herbal mixer. Our other flavors will explore other sweeteners but the delicate botanicals in this one needed sugar.
